Reading Challenges for All Ages

Reading Inspires Lifelong Learning

We want to keep people of all ages engaged in reading throughout their lives. Our reading challenges have been designed to do just that – by encouraging reading and making it fun! Adults, teens, kids, toddlers, and babies can all participate and earn prizes. To see which challenge(s) you are eligible for and start logging your reading, visit our Beanstack site! You can find more details on how to register for and use Beanstack below.

  • AGES 0 TO 18 – with challenges and activities for kids of all ages!
  • LOG MINUTES – reading just 20 minutes per day will quickly add up to the total requirement of 15 hours!
  • EARN ACTIVITY BADGES – designed to nourish the mind, body, & soul. New Year, New YOU!
  • WIN – every person who finishes the reading requirements will win a deluxe hot cocoa kit, complete with a WRLS exclusive mug. Not only that, but those who complete the entire challenge (activity badges included) will earn entry into our grand prize drawing for a $50 gift card!

1,000 Books Before Kindergarten – ongoing

  • AGES 0 TO 5 – promotes early literacy!
  • LOG BOOKS – every single book can be logged on Beanstack, every single time you read it! If you are participating in more than one challenge, you can “count” your reading for both. For example, if you read four books in 20 minutes, you could log the minutes for the “Master of Minutes” challenge AND log four books towards your “1,000 Books Before Kindergarten” reading log.
  • ON YOUR SCHEDULE – some may finish in less than a year, others may take several years. Either way is okay! There is no deadline, as long as you finish before you turn five!
  • FABULOUS PRIZES – earn prizes at every milestone, including: slime, mini doodle boards, jumbo bubble wands, and more! See the picture above for a preview of some of the other prizes.

100 Books Before College – ongoing

  • AGES 10 TO 19 – promotes lifelong learning!
  • LOG BOOKS – books you read can be entered on Beanstack! Just be sure the books are age appropriate – think chapter books or graphic novels, not picture books. If you are participating in more than one challenge, you can “count” your reading for both! For example, if you read a chapter book in four hours, you could log those minutes for the “Master of Minutes” challenge AND log one book towards your “100 Books Before College” reading log.
  • ON YOUR SCHEDULE – some may finish in a year or two, others may take several years. Either way is okay! There is no deadline as long as you finish before you turn 19!
  • GREAT PRIZES – earn prizes every 25 books you read! Peek at the photo above for a preview of the prizes, including: a giant chocolate bar, Kwik Trip meal coupon, Earbud Headphones, and a Barnes & Noble Gift Card.

Our reading challenges have gone digital with the help of Beanstack. Beanstack is a free online service that offers an innovative (and contactless!) method for participating in reading challenges! With Beanstack, the whole family can record reading, earn badges, track progress, and more! It also touts an integrated mobile app if on-the-go is more your speed. Registering once will allow you to view and participate in library sponsored programs all year long, and participation is completely free. All you have to do is sign up!

There are two easy ways to register yourself, your child, or the whole family:

  1. Navigate to https://wrlsweb.beanstack.com/reader365 and create an account.
  2. Download the Beanstack App (available for both iOS and Android), then search for “Bekkum.” Follow the prompts to create an account.

Once you have created an account, you can add as many “readers” as you would like. Beanstack will automatically display the reading challenge(s) appropriate for each reader’s age so that you can register. As our library sponsors additional reading challenges throughout the year, you will be able to easily view and register for any available to your age group. This also means that if you already have a Beanstack account, you can just log in to your existing account to view all our current challenges!

For more information on how to register for or use the Beanstack website, please reference the video below (made for Summer Reading, but the process is the same!). Or, if you run into any questions or problems, feel free to contact our friendly staff at 634-4419. We would be delighted to help you get started!
